The US and Palestinian Statehood

J Street believes the US should support the Palestinians in their transition to statehood in the context of a comprehensive, negotiated agreement with Israel. A failed Palestinian state would be a source of instability in the region.

A stable and successful Palestinian state is both a US and an Israeli interest.  This explains Israel’s official support for U.S. assistance to the Palestinian Authority. The United States should play an active and leading role in the international effort to provide the economic, political and technical assistance that will be necessary for Palestinian state-building.

Appropriate levels of oversight must be applied to aid to the Palestinians as with any overseas assistance program. However, oversight regulations should not be designed to preclude the actual provision of aid that serves American national and security interests
